The Art Of Zari
The use of zari is a distinguishing feature of Swati & Sunaina Gold’s sarees, certified by the brand as its purest form being made in India presently. Such zari is sparsely used in the country’s handlooms contemporarily, and aside from achieving distinct aesthetic qualities, helps in bringing refinement to functional aspects such as softness in wear and drape.

This film was commissioned by Swati & Sunaina Gold as part of a fund raiser initiated by Vogue India magazine in 2020, titled TO INDIA, WITH LOVE, in association with the Natasha and Adar Poonawalla Foundation. It features Mekhala Bose, a renowned musician, actress and choreographer, a muse to the brand.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS
Since Swati & Sunaina Gold’s inception, the brand has explored some of the most refined
traditions of handlooms in Banaras, focusing on the highest levels of their artistic
excellence. In the process, it has become known for pioneering the certification of zari —
fine metallic yarn — used in its fabrics. Made with 98.5 percent silver, and electroplated
with 24 Carat gold, such zari is its purest form being made in the country today.
Swati & Sunaina Gold’s collections include Banaras handloom Classics which usetechniques such Kadhua and Jamdani, as well as rare traditions such as Rangkaat,Gyaser, Tissue, Pachrangi, Gyaser and Dam Pach. These, in turn, have become thebrand’s Classics. In parallel, the brand has experimented with new materials and motifs,forming an eclectic oeuvre of designs which draw from a wide range of Indian andinternational sources. The 2022-23 collection VANYA is an example of this, using wildsilks of tussar, eri and muga in floral designs not used conventionally in Indian textiles.
In its early years, Swati & Sunaina Gold presented collections through Fashion Weeks andmulti-designer exhibitions, which extended the presentation of its textiles to widernarratives and audiences. Since 2017, it has evolved a format of unique curatedexhibitions. These have helped further the interests of its founders in the histories oftextiles towards special projects, and seeded the Art of Gold initiative of the brand.
